Conexión Antillana for Radio Gladys Palmera, created by David Virelles

For those interested on my Instagram slides and commentary about Cuban music, I produced a podcast in 2020 called “Conexión Antillana” for one of the most extensive and thorough collections/ archives of Cuban music in the world, Gladys Palmera, based in Madrid. The episodes aired during Covid on Gladys’s radio station - Radio Gladys Palmera.

The first installment was an interview with the legendary Chucho Valdés about one of his first recordings - his participation on the Cuban piano showcase “Pianoforte".

I also produced a playlist for Gilles Peterson’s show Worldwide in 2016 in which I also shared pre - Revolutionary Cuban music, as well as some of the work of my NYC peers and some of my own .

All links for the episodes of "Conexión Antillana" and Gilles’s Worldwide show are listed below.

Enjoy!

An interview with the legendary Chucho Valdés - oral history about the classic album “"Pianoforte” and a personal account on the cultural climate of 1960’s Havana. (This episode is fully in Spanish).

An episode featuring modern composers - improvisers that I have been inspired by, some of whom I’ve had the honor of working with. A look into contemporary experimentalism.

A wide variety of Cuban music with systems of improvisation as a central component.

A playlist showcasing a wide variety of music from all over the world.

5. Vision

The universe of the late innovator, Cuban pianist - composer Emiliano Salvador, through the music that inspired him, the work of musicians influenced by his legacy, and of course, his music itself.

A reflection on the importance and influence of spiritual beliefs and spirituality (and its inherent music systems) in the musical lineages of the Diaspora.

This episode explores the sounds of Cuba’s filin movement, as a tribute to the late guitarrist and composer Ñico Rojas.

A showcase of pianists, residing in the island and elsewhere - from Havana to Toronto, New York, Sao Paulo and Madrid.
